My teaching philosophy is based on teaching a relationship of
musicianship and technique. In other words I teach musical ideas and
relate those ideas to guitar playing. The end result is that you are not
only capable of playing the guitar but also understand music on a more
abstract level. Nearly all guitar styles are based on the same
understanding of music. Thus you can develop into a versatile musician
capable of playing most any style you choose.
Method books I use (I’m always open to using new materials if a
student has a book he/she wants to use):
- Classical students: Christopher Parkening Guitar Methods Vol.
1&2 (Hal Leonard)
- 12 and under: FJH Young Beginner Guitar Methods Vol.1&2 (with
CD) (FJH Music Company INC.)
- 12 and over: Sight To Sound, By Leon White (Dale Zdenek
Publications)
- Improvisation: Jam Trax and Jamey Aebersold series of play along
CDs.
The above books are stocked at The New School of Music. They can also
be purchased from amazon.com. In addition to using the above books I
also use my own handouts covering: Improvisation with pentatonic scales
and modes Strumming and finger picking Chords as they appear in keys
(chords in C major, chords in G major, etc.) Song writing Technique:
speed, left hand - right hand coordination, etc. Practicing techniques
And much, much more.
